Today is the last day of primary elections before Election Day in November. According to primary expert Josh Putnam, this is the latest Presidential primary in modern history. For the Democratic nomination, Joe Biden has come to an enormous lead, and at this point in the race is the presumptive nominee. He currently has 2,627 delegates. There is a similar paradigm for the Republican nomination, with Donald J. Trump heading with 2,367 delegates. 1,237 are required to be eligible for the Republican nomination, and 1,991 are required to be eligible for the Democratic nomination. However, while important, the presidential primaries are not where the excitement is. Today, there are major elections in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Vermont, South Dakota, Connecticut, and Georgia. In Minnesota and Georgia, there are major races for their state representatives.
In Minnesota, Rep. Ilhan Omar, who is known for being part of the Squad (Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, Ayanna Presley), is facing fierce competition in her primary election. She is a controversial figure in her party, with a history of holding an anti Israel stance. This has made her deeply unpopular with the Jewish voters in her district, who have contributed their money and manpower to make sure her opponent, attorney Antone Melton-Meaux, wins the primary election. However, Melton-Meaux has a controversial history as well, with a complaint to the Federal Election Commission filed over an accusation of him concealing the true recipients of campaign funds through shell companies. Melton-Meaux’s policy positions are much more conservative compared to Omar’s with him backing a public option to healthcare as opposed to a single payer system. He is also not in favor of defunding the police.
In Georgia, there are two major Republican elections, with the most exciting being the race for the 14th Congressional District race between Marjorie Taylor Green and Dr. John Cowan. Marjorie Taylor has an incredibly controversial history. She started out the election with a large lead, but has refused to disparage QAnon, and has also been caught on camera making racist, anti Semitic, and Islamophobic statements. Dr. John is hot on her tail, criticizing her for using coronavirus relief funds for her company despite her campaign being self funded. He has also attacked her for not using the Department of Homeland Security’s E-Verify system to check the immigration status of her employees. Greene has come for Cowan, calling him a “globalist Never Trumper” who lacks the strength to stand up to China. Currently, they are tied at 38 percent.

Believe it or not, the 2020 Democratic presidential primary is still going on — but it comes to an end today. Connecticut’s presidential primary is the last of the cycle, and the fact that it’s happening so late in the season is rare. According to presidential primaries expert and FiveThirtyEight contributor Josh Putnam, it marks the latest presidential nominating contest in the modern era.
But it’s not the presidential contest that will capture headlines today. A total of five states1 will hold their down-ballot primaries or runoffs today, in which the fight between the radical wings and more moderate factions will continue for both parties. Will a controversial member of “the Squad” — a group of first-term congresswomen of color known for their progressive views — lose her Democratic primary? And will Republicans send a believer in the QAnon conspiracy theory (with a history of racist comments) to Congress? We will (maybe) learn the answers today.
