On the day before Thanksgiving, President-Elect Biden gave a Thanksgiving speech to a weary nation. He asked for Americans to stay home, and try to find unity amidst troubling times. Biden reminded the country that, “We’re at war with the virus, not each other” when he spoke at the Queen Theatre in Wilmington, Delaware.
His speech came on the heels of the end of a momentous and divisive election. Former Vice President Biden won with 306 electoral votes to President Trump’s 232. However, despite victory in both the popular and electoral votes, Trump and many of his GOP allies believed that the election had been rigged. They claimed that conservative poll watchers hadn’t been allowed to oversee voting, along with tampering and harassment on behalf of the Democrats. The Trump administration took these claims to court, contesting the election results in Michigan, Georgia, and Pennsylvania. The courts in both Michigan and Georgia had already thrown out the campaign’s lawsuits by November 25th. However, November 25th was the date that Pennsylvania officially dropped the case that the Trump campaign had levied against them, thus officially handing Biden 20 electoral votes. With those electoral votes, the 2020 Presidential election is officially over.
At a hearing in Gettysburg, PA on the 25th, one of Trump’s attornies her phone on speaker so that the courtroom could hear Trump from the phone. He reiterated claims of voter frauds on behalf of the poll workers, and intimidation of his GOP voters and allies on election day. The court ruled that these claims were false.
At the end of the day, both Biden and Trump offered their thoughts to the nation. Which message the country will take to heart, only time will tell.
